I admit it, when I learned I had diabetes I had to change my eating habits. I like my carbs, a lot. I'm a gravy and mashed potatoes girl. I also love my breads and biscuits. Changing has been a challenge. However, over the last several months, due to doctors orders I have faithfully followed a diabetic diet. (with two exceptions....Thanksgiving and Christmas)
Now I am not saying I went hog wild. I didn't have a bunch of gooey pies or anything like that. I merely allowed myself to eat the normal fixins.
At my doctors appointment around 10 days ago I still managed to weigh in 22 pounds lighter. Wooo Hooo. Discipline goes a long way. I want to cheat. I just tell myself that the candy and sugars could seriously hurt me. (as in death)
Works miracles. Suddenly the urge to put said candies etc in ones mouth lessens. Amazing eh?
It also helps to join a supportive Diabetes group. I have several diabetes informational links and groups listed to the right. Check them out. I added Diabetes Files today. Take a peek.

Top 5 Things I'd Rather Do with my Blood Glucose Tester |
![]()
I don't know about everyone else, but I HATE poking my finger every day. When I'm sick my blood sugar goes all over the map. This kidney infection has my numbers jumping from 238 all the way to 68. I feel dizzy and tired. My body needs extra hours of sleep and I'm not sure I will feel rested again until the infection is gone. With NO immune system I'm not sure how long it will take to get over this stoooooooopid thing! GRRRRRR. Can ya tell I'm frustrated?????
Today is one of those "mad at Lupus" days. Go figure. I have six mouth sores, my arms are all rashy and I get dizzy every time I stand up.... what does all that mean... I am in yet another Flare up of my stinkin' Lupus. And I can blame it all on the dumb kidney infection.
- Jab someone else with the lancet.
- Eat chocolate. Oh rats I had to give that up.
- Complain.
- Think up lame excuses and forget to test. LOL
- Count the freckles on my arm instead.

Diabetes diets, energy, and me. |
Okay, so no more syrupy pancakes on Sunday morning for me. I'm learning. My blood sugar was 167 this morning. That ruled out anything remotely sweet. Protein was the order of the day.
Being new to all this, I went straight to my computer to see if yesterday's family blowout and all the STRESS could have been the reason for high reading. Sure enough, from what I read, cortisol gets released when you are angry or extremely emotional starting a whole string of events with your insulin and blood sugar. The site I went to suggests keeping a fairly calm lifestyle. Ha!
Okay, so the big question. I've had a few emails and I wonder about this. Should this blog be less personal? Do I reveal too much of me? Should it be more about writing?
I've been so busy with personal issues I haven't had a lot of time for my own WIP's (works in progress) My two favorite characters are being completely ignored. I have written some articles--mostly on arthritis, diabetic issues or other things to which I can closely relate, and I've been sending out poetry.
As an emerging writer (to the published world) I'm asking YOU, my readers, to let me know.
